Most people who come here have been told they need extensive testing.
In many cases, that isn’t where we start.
Testing can be valuable — but more testing does not always mean better care.
I begin with patterns: symptoms, history, and physiology.
Labs are used selectively, when they add clarity or direction.
How Lab Ordering Works
As a naturopathic doctor in New York State, I do not order standard blood work locally.
However:
I can review existing lab work and provide a broader, pattern-based interpretation.
For distance clients, I can order certain specialty labs out-of-pocket when appropriate.
In many cases, extensive testing is not necessary.
When Functional Lab Testing Is Most Helpful
Testing is more likely to be useful when:
Symptoms are unclear or not improving with initial care
There is a need to confirm a specific pattern
Previous treatments have not worked
Additional detail would change the treatment approach
Labs I May Use
When testing is indicated, I primarily use specialty laboratories such as:
Doctor’s Data
Vibrant Wellness
Diagnostechs
These are used thoughtfully — not routinely.
Specific tests are chosen based on the clinical picture, not as a default starting point.
My Approach to Testing
Labs should clarify a pattern — not replace clinical reasoning.
They are tools to refine a plan, not substitutes for understanding the whole person.
Labs should clarify a pattern — not become the focus of care or distract from what is actually helping.
If testing makes sense, I’ll explain why.
If it doesn’t, I won’t recommend it.
Many clients improve significantly without spending thousands of dollars on panels.
Am I a Functional Medicine Practitioner?
My approach is more of a hybrid.
I primarily work from traditional methods — including Traditional Western Herbalism, homeopathy, Ayurveda, and kinesiology muscle testing — and then add functional laboratory testing when it is likely to provide useful information.
While I do value some parts of functional medicine, I do not rely on large testing panels or standardized protocols as a starting point.
Naturopathic care is best when goal is to understand how your body is functioning first, and then use testing when it adds clarity — not complexity.
If you’re unsure whether testing is necessary in your case, we can sort that out during an initial consultation.
