Constitutional Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine works best when treatment is based on how your body is functioning. Constitutional herbal medicine does not prescribe herbs based solely on a disease label. Instead, herbs are selected based on patterns in the body. This allows treatment to be tailored to the individual rather than by generic protocol

One person runs hot, tense, and wired.
Another feels cold, heavy, and sluggish.

If they receive the same herbal formula, one of them will not improve.

In practice I look at signs such as:

  • Heat vs cold
  • Tension vs weakness
  • Dryness vs excess fluid
  • Digestive and circulatory patterns
  • Nervous system tone

These are practical observations about how your system is functioning, not abstract theory.

This pattern-based approach is shared across many traditional systems of medicine, including Western herbalism, Chinese medicine, and Ayurveda. During visits we identify these patterns and build a treatment plan designed specifically for your system.

Custom Herbal Formulas

I keep over 150 individual herbal tinctures in my office. This allows me to create formulas that are very specific to each person, and adjust them as patterns change. I am also able to ship custom herbal mixes to clients who work with me remotely.

Sometimes a single herb clearly matches a case.

More often formulas contain 2–5 herbs selected to work together.

I avoid large “kitchen-sink” formulas unless there is a clear reason. Simple formulas are often more effective and easier for the body to respond to.

As your system changes, formulas can be adjusted.

Conditions and Situations Where Constitutional Herbal Medicine May Help

Constitutional herbal medicine is often helpful for people experiencing:

  • Digestive issues such as bloating, reflux, or slow digestion
  • Chronic stress, tension, and nervous system imbalance
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Hormonal and metabolic imbalance
  • Chronic inflammatory patterns
  • Long-standing health issues that have not improved with standard treatments or supplements

Who This Approach Works Best For

People who are very sensitive will do better with herbs specific for them, than shotgun suppolent formulas

Being more specific with herbs, usually lowers the total number of things someone has to take.

Customized formulas can be adjusted over time.

Some people with high stress or sensitivityies do best with tiny doses. Which is very easy to do with herbal tinctures or teas.

Herbs are often central to treatment, but they are rarely used alone.

Depending on the case, care may also include:

  • Nutritional support
  • Mineral and nutrient therapy
  • Dietary adjustments
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Functional laboratory testing when helpful

Constitutional herbal medicine is one of the core tools used in my Systems Terrain Medicine approach to restoring regulation in the body.
